Everyone suffers from
constipation now and again. This is not a serious problem unless it becomes chronic constipation (occurs frequently, and especially for a long duration of time). Considering the fact that our bodies are designed to expel waste products, it's not difficult to understand how constipation inhibits a healthy lifestyle.

Essentially problems having a bowel movement can be condensed into two categories:
1. Costiveness
2. Constipation
Costiveness refers to the consistence of the waste. If it is hard and dry, then there are certain foods and liquids that may alleviate the problem. On the other hand, constipation refers to the actual process of a bowel movement, having to do with the muscular contraction and relaxation of the bowel walls that allow elimination to occur. If there is a problem in this area, then you need to focus on foods that affect the muscles, nerves and cell walls. In conclusion, then, costiveness refers to the consistency of the waste while constipation refers to the function of the waste elimination system.
Regardless of the technical distinction noted above, most people just say they have constipation no matter what the cause of their problems in going to the bathroom. So let's look at some helpful hints.
1. Make sure you drink enough water. Without enough water, waste material becomes dry and hard to pass. This is especially true in areas where there is apt to be dehydration caused by dry air, such in the dessert regions.
2. Make sure you feed your body the nutrients (contained in foods) that promote smooth muscle function (function of the bowel) such as vitamin B complex and electrolyte minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.). THESE ARE BEST TAKEN IN FOODS, not as mineral tablets.
3. Reduce drying agents in your diet. This especially refers to drinking alcohol, which dries you out.
4. Reduce non-nutrient bulking foods such as dough, bread, pizza, and other non vegetable matter. These all tend to dry out the bowel contents.
5. If the problem is chronic, see a physician to rule out any obstructions (something blocking your bowels)
6. Switch to a fruit, vegetable, nut and seed diet for 11 days.
7. Switch your diet (listed above), and if you're healthy, try a daily enema routine for 5 days
8. A more extreme measure is to go on a juice fast, drinking nutritious vegetable and fruit juices every day, while also adding a fiber drink.
Be careful not to be lured into muscle relaxants, herbal stimulants (cascara sagrada, etc.) or other temporary fixes if you are not going to take more safe and long-term steps to ironing out your bowel troubles. Laxatives and other drugs and chemicals are masking a more serious problem. Using them can create side effects (new health issues), slow organ, tissue, or health problems, and/or form dependencies.
It is important to consume raw, fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, seeds and oils not only for bowel problems, but for overall health.
